Challenge Abroad – Japanese Students Choose ESE

Seven students from a Japanese Institute are participating in a training programme in the Malta as part of the Challenge Abroad Programme. They arrived on Saturday, 1st March and depart on Monday, 10th March. They are being supervised.

The Challenge Abroad Programme is a specialised elective course, and during the 10-day on-site training, students stay with host families, study English at the ESE, and work on projects.

As part of their project, students introduced Japanese life and culture to students from other countries and teachers, and received feedback. Topics covered were Japanese sweets which were offered, including kinoko no Yama and Takenoko no Sato, and they discussed their favourite anime. Students experienced intercultural communication through various interactions, sometimes finding it difficult to find the right time to speak, and responded to others’ reactions. When things didn’t go well, they made adjustments to prepare for the next time, and they eventually grew more confident speaking English.
